Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Inc. is navigating two lawsuits following a significant product recall initiated due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. On July 26, Boar’s Head voluntarily recalled 10 deli products, totaling over 200,000 pounds of meat from their Jarratt, Virginia facility. This recall expanded to 7 million pounds after the USDA linked one of the products to a national Listeria outbreak.
A possible class action lawsuit was filed on August 1 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The lawsuit alleges that Boar’s Head failed to properly communicate the extent of the Listeria contamination, misleading consumers. Plaintiff Rita Torres claims she and other customers would not have purchased the affected products if properly warned.
Another lawsuit was filed by a Missouri couple in the St. Louis Circuit Court, alleging that Boar’s Head’s products caused severe illness. Sue Fleming reportedly spent nine days in the hospital and an additional 11 days in rehabilitation after consuming liverwurst.
Boar’s Head has yet to comment on these legal proceedings.
