A recommendation to enhance wind-borne debris building code requirements was recently voted down by the North Carolina Building Code Council.
The recommendation, backed by the insurance industry, would require new homes in coastal areas vulnerable to hurricane damage to include protective features such as storm shutters and reinforced entrance and garage doors.
"My personal opinion is that I’m concerned about the impact the decision is going to have on the availability, if not affordability of insurance in our coastal area," said Dascheil Props, North Carolina‘s chief deputy insurance commissioner, based in Raleigh.
