Cattle, Horses And Homes Lost In Kansas Wildfires

Friday, December 17th, 2021 Property

Officials say multiple homes and structures were destroyed by wildfires that scorched part of central Kansas.

Russell County Administrator John Fletcher said the fires, fueled by Wednesday’s powerful winds, also killed an unknown number of cattle and horses. One person was being treated at a hospital burn unit.

The National Weather Service in Wichita said the Russell County sheriff reported at least 10 homes were destroyed in fires that stretched over 150 square miles.

Greg Rose, a 911 emergency dispatcher, said seven of the county’s nine fire departments were out Thursday fighting blazes that rekindled overnight.
