Doctor sentenced for insurance fraud scheme

Thursday, August 15th, 2013 Fraud Life & Health Litigation

A doctor who owned a Cape Coral chiropractic clinic at the center of an insurance fraud scheme is heading to federal prison for five years.
Federal Judge John Steele also ordered Dr. Stephen Lovell to serve three years of probation after his release. Walking out of the courthouse after learning his fate, with his family by his side, Lovell maintained his innocence. "It’s an absolute nightmare," Lovell said.
Federal agents raided Lovell’s Xtreme Care Rehabilitation Center in March of 2012. Patients faked injuries, and the clinic profited from fraudulent insurance claims from their visits. Lovell was among eight people charged. Following a February trial, a jury acquitted Lovell on all but one count: Conspiracy to Commit Mail Fraud.
