Calming winds helped firefighters make progress Wednesday as they fought blazes in Southern California that have burned nearly 8,400 acres of rugged land. The fire was sparked shortly before 5:00 a.m. by a burning sport-utility vehicle parked on a dirt road. No homes were threatened. In Orange County, a more than 8,300-acre fire east of Anaheim and Orange was 35% contained. Fire officials had said earlier they were worried about flare-ups as Santa Ana winds gusted to 40 mph. By Wednesday night the drying winds had slowed to 15 to 20 mph, the National Weather Service said.
