Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine is planning to create a specific policy language to spell out coverage for mold in state homeowner and commercial insurance policies and has asked the Alliance of American Insurers to coordinate insurers input.
According to Downers Grove, Ill.-based Alliance, Georgia has not yet approved any personal lines mold filings and only a few commercial filings.
The Alliance noted that during a recent meeting, the commissioner told insurers he wants to leave the current protection that consumers have for water damage intact. But he will consider placing limits for the cost of mold remediation. The commissioner added that defense costs should not be included in any mold sub-limits.
