In a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, researchers found that 37 percent of driver deaths could be avoided with side airbags that protect the driver’s head. Airbags that protected only the chest and abdomen but not the head reduced deaths by 26 percent. Lower fatality risks were observed among all age groups.
