According to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, with the scheduled adjournment date of June 19th, Louisiana lawmakers will be taking action on several important issues in the next few weeks that have the potential of reshaping the state's insurance marketplace. Although none of the major insurance bills have been sent to the governor's office, there are several bills that have passed one chamber. Bills of special interest to insurers include SB 740, which extends by one year the time that a consumer has to file a claim resulting from hurricanes Katrina and Rita; SB 693, which repeals the flex-rating law; SB 707, which blurs the line between insurers' responsibilities to their policyholder and third-party claimants and SB 620, which increases penalties for insurers that fail to timely pay claims.
