Little-known state unit focuses on insurance fraud

Seemingly harmless offenses like padding claims and bolder actions like staging car wrecks and arson are all versions of insurance fraud, which is estimated to cost the average family $1,200 a year. "The only limit is your imagination," said Gary Griffith, inspector general of the Fraud Unit, a little-known division of the state Offices of the Insurance Commissioner. The crime can be simple. For example: Something’s bad, an accident makes it worse, and you don’t own up to the original condition.
