Colorado Governor Jared Polis has signed a consumer protection bill to ensure people with limited English proficiency (LEP) can read and understand critical insurance policy documents.
The legislation, House Bill 23-1004, requires insurers to provide certification that policy documents have been accurately translated by a certified translator in languages other than English.
The bill's text clarifies that the term 'certified translator' refers to someone certified by the American Translators Association (ATA).
It requires that carriers offering home, renters and auto insurance must provide policy documents in the same language used for advertising purposes, and must offer the policy application, policy, and any related documents in any language requested by the policyholder.
Sponsors of the legislation said it is crucial for protecting non-English-speaking communities in Colorado, ensuring that they have a clear understanding of what they are signing.
