New York insurance Superintendent Gregory V. Serio has announced a new procedure for ensuring that medical providers are paid promptly for treating victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.

Under the joint initiative, seven major health insurers will pay all medical bills incurred in treating work-related injuries of policyholders. Each insurer will then work with the appropriate workers‘ comp carriers to allocate payments.

The health insurers participating in the initiative are Aetna U.S. Healthcare, CIGNA HealthCare, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, GHI, Horizon Healthcare, HIP and Oxford.

The New York insurance department added that other health care plans have indicated a willingness to be flexible in providing uninterrupted health-care coverage for all workers affected by the disaster.
