Ranchers Scramble For Insurance

Wednesday, December 31st, 2003 Property

Shortly after the nation‘s first mad cow case was announced Dec. 23, Nebraska cattle producers rushed to sign up for a livestock insurance program. It was suspended by federal officials hours later. "You couldn‘t flag all the calls," said Jeff Dominisse, a Norfolk insurance agent for Farm Credit Services of America. "I had people calling my cell phone I had never heard of wanting to sign up for the livestock insurance." The pilot program for cattle started this year. It was intended to protect small and medium producers from catastrophic losses, just like crop insurance.
