The National Association of Insurance Commissioners and leading insurance industry organizations are already assuring the American public that there are enough funds to cover economic losses stemming from Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.
NAIC executive vice president Catherine J. Weatherford acknowledged that the organization had received inquiries about the impact that the Pentagon and the World Trade Center attacks might have on the insurance industry.
In a prepared statement, Ms. Weatherford wrote that: "America's insurance companies have time and again shown their ability to respond to and recover from other significant disasters. Early loss estimates are in the $10 billion range."
