The Slave Insurance Mystery
Wednesday, August 21st, 2002 Life & HealthWhenever I teach a class of adjusters, I am amazed how few read mysteries. Some apparently read nothing at all; their horrible reports reflect that. Thank goodness some wise teacher introduced me to good mysteries in the seventh grade. Since then, Ive read hundreds maybe thousands of them, even penned a few, and, like all good mystery buffs, I have my favorite writers. One is Sara Paretsky, who, as a former claim executive with CNA in Chicago, has installed a good measure of insurance intrigue into her novels, including her latest best seller, Total Recall (Delacorte Press, 2001). Her hard-headed, often beaten-up detective, V. I. Warshawski, J.D. and private eye, always manages to help the little people and discredit the rich rascals. I was fortunate enough to meet her a few years ago, presenting her a copy of an article Id written about her for an insurance publication.
