In a remarkable achievement for electric vehicles (EVs), three newly introduced models have clinched the prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Genesis Electrified GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Lexus RZ have all earned this coveted recognition, signaling a significant step forward in EV safety.
To qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award in 2023, vehicles must meet rigorous safety criteria. These include achieving good ratings in essential categories such as driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. Furthermore, the vehicles must feature acceptable or good headlights as standard across all trims. Importantly, a front crash prevention system must be available, earning advanced or superior ratings in both the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.
IIHS President David Harkey emphasized the importance of pedestrian safety, saying, "To be environmentally friendly, our vehicles and our cities also need to be pedestrian-friendly. All three of these vehicles have standard front crash prevention systems designed to protect pedestrians both during the day and at night, when most fatal pedestrian crashes happen."
The Genesis Electrified GV70 achieved advanced ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention evaluations. Similarly, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Lexus RZ secured superior ratings in these critical tests.
When it comes to headlight safety, the Electrified GV70 leads the way with good-rated headlights across all trims, while the Ioniq 6 and RZ feature standard acceptable-rated headlights.
