While economists and politicians debate the existence of a recession using a variety of statistics, fire officials need only look at the number of arson cases — particularly torched vehicles. "In a recession, we see an increase in arson because people are overextended or living beyond their means," said Portsmouth Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire.
