Since November 1998, when the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against the gun industry, attempting to recover some of the expenses the city incurred dealing with gun-related violence, more than 30 local governments have followed Chicago‘s example. Decisions have recently been handed down in three jurisdictions, dismissing Chicago‘s suit and allowing Cleveland and 12 Californian cities and counties to continue pursuit of their claims.
"Naturally, I‘m disappointed by this ruling, but I am not discouraged," said Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, following the ruling of the Cook County Circuit Court. "We will appeal the ruling, of course; and we think our chances of winning an appeal are good, because the evidence on our side is indisputable. The only question is over interpretation of the law."
