James Lynch, the Chief Actuary and Senior Vice President, Research and Education, at the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I), is retiring at the end of May 2021, the Triple-I announced today.

Lynch, who will turn 61 this year, joined the Triple-I in 2014. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). In his seven years with the Insurance Information Institute, Lynch has successfully overseen a broad expansion of the Triple-I’s online editorial content as well as its white papers and webinars.

The Triple-I’s website had 6.7 million page views in 2020, an increase of 31 percent year-over-year from 2019. Meanwhile, the Triple-I blog secured nearly 183,000 page views in 2020, having grown 71 percent year-over-year since 2019. At the same time, Lynch expanded the Triple-I’s professional relationships with J.D. Power and Milliman.

‘While we are excited for Jim to achieve a personal goal of early retirement, he will be sorely missed,’ stated Sean Kevelighan, CEO, Triple-I. ‘Under James Lynch’s leadership, the Triple-I has consistently produced timely, data-driven, and unique insurance industry insights. For instance, he was the co-author last year of a well-received white paper on cyber insurance and won praise this year at an academic webinar on the rising cost of insurance litigation.’

‘This was a difficult decision,’ Lynch said. ‘The Insurance Information Institute is an extraordinary platform to educate the public about an industry which is at the center of the world’s economy. My position at the Triple-I led to national media appearances, invitations to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives, and the opportunity to develop widely discussed research, such as our estimate that U.S. auto insurers provided $14 billion in premium relief to its pandemic-impacted policyholders in 2020.’

Lynch brought to the Triple-I more than 20 years of experience in property/casualty insurance, having been Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary, at QBE the Americas and Senior Vice President, Chief Reserving Actuary, White Mountains Reinsurance of America. He was elected to a three-year term on the Casualty Actuarial Society’s (CAS) board of directors in 2017. Before working in insurance, Lynch was a journalist, spending seven years at the Miami Herald.

Lynch earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri and a master’s degree in journalism at Indiana University. In addition, Lynch holds a bachelor’s degree in statistics from Florida International University.

‘The Triple-I is committed to maintaining an extremely high standard for the Research and Education division’s important work and will provide details on its leadership going forward in the coming weeks,’ Kevelighan concluded.
