Assistant Controller II - Reinsurance Operations

The typical starting salary range ($158,000 - $194,000) for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Depending on location this may be a hybrid position and will require a minimum of 2 days in office.

Manages group of reinsurance financial professionals responsible for a wide array of activities associated with various assumed and ceded reinsurance agreements placed by Liberty Mutual, including, but not limited to, financial planning and analysis, accounting, audit, external reporting, and receivable/payable management. Possesses the vision to set strategic direction for the team in response to changes in the business environment. Uses superior communication skills to influence and collaborate with all levels of the organization. Responsible for developing employees with the capabilities needed to meet the current and future objectives of the enterprise. Fosters an environment of continuous improvement, initiating and/or leading cross-functional projects to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Responsibilities:

• Core accounting activities, including account reconciliations, journal entries, executing on key controls, attestation, supporting internal and external audit work, and accounting results review.
• Core reinsurance accounting activities, including reinsurance contract setup, recording results in reinsurance system, communication with internal & external counterparties/stakeholders, receivable/payable management, and involuntary reinsurance filings.
• Core reinsurance reporting activities, including GAAP consolidated reinsurance reporting, STAT reinsurance reporting, monthly management reporting and analysis, financial planning, and catastrophe loss reporting.
• Partner with internal stakeholders, including IT, on various initiatives to support day to day work and strategic initiatives to enable enhanced capabilities and efficiencies.
• Responsible for the accurate, timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual book close cycles for a complex accounting operation.
• Responsible for the accurate production of all financial reports issued by a complex accounting operation, ensuring compliance with all accounting regulations.
• Responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of an internal control framework that ensures accurate, timely and compliant financial reporting.
• Acts as a financial advisor to strategic business units or other departments, having the vision to make recommendations for accounting treatment that improves business outcomes.
• Understands the interdependencies of financial systems, prioritizing and implementing enhancements and planning appropriately for changes.
• Has the vision and insight to recognize emerging trends and organizational changes and can set strategic direction for the work unit.
• Fosters an environment of continuous improvement, initiating and/or leading cross-functional projects to improve efficiency or effectiveness. Responsible for developing the team`s capabilities to meet both current and future needs of the accounting operation and the enterprise.
• Attracts, engages, and advances the careers of people from all backgrounds and experiences.
• Structures the organization to address changes in the business or improve customer service.

• Bachelor`s degree (Accounting or Finance)
• Insurance / Reinsurance accounting experience preferred
• Minimum of 10 years of accounting or finance experience
• Must demonstrate the ability to execute thoroughly in a fast-paced work environment, adapting quickly to changing conditions to achieve results
• Possesses superior communication skills to influence and collaborate with all levels of the organization to gain support for ideas and execute on projects that deliver value to customers
• Comfortable leading meetings, making strategic recommendations to senior management and giving presentations to increasingly large audiences
