Casualty Liability Adjuster
Annual Salary: $76,190.40 - $82,264.00

Under the general direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Agency Operations, the Casualty Liability Adjuster will evaluate, investigate, negotiate and resolve complex casualty, liability and property claims for Southwest Washington Insurance Risk Cooperative members (school districts) and engage in claims administration activities.

Senior Casualty Liability Adjuster
Annual Salary: $87,880.00 - $94,868.80
Under the general direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Agency Operations, the Senior Casualty Liability Adjuster will evaluate, investigate, negotiate and resolve complex casualty, liability and property claims for Southwest Washington Insurance Risk Cooperative members (school districts).


Please note that once the stay-at-home order has been lifted, this position will have an office at our main ESD 112 building in Vancouver, WA and will be required to travel to different sites in our service region.

Essential Functions:
Casualty Liability Adjuster

  1. Develop and maintain professional relationships with over 20 school district superintendents who are members of the Southwest Washington Insurance Risk Cooperative, and the team of ESD employees who work in Insurance Programs.
  2. Open and set-up a new claim after obtaining information on claim incident reports.
  3. Analyze and determine claim coverage, investigate facts of claim to determine liability and damages, and conduct site inspections, draw diagrams and take photos.
  4. Determine initial reserves and continuously maintain appropriate reserves.
  5. Maintain an up-to-date activity log, an effective diary review system, and organize file material ensuring claims data is entered accurately, reviewed and updated on a timely basis.
  6. Communicate professionally, orally and in writing, with a variety of people in different roles with a range of responsibilities and consult with districts on strategies and settlements of certain claim matters.
  7. Develop a litigation management plan for all litigated files which includes a plan for case management, cost control and disposition.
  8. Notify and report to excess insurers on large claims as appropriate.
  9. Prepare periodic status reports and statistical summary reports.
  10. Negotiate settlements, including the use of structured settlements.
  11. Control costs on claims where coverage is in question, liability is disputed or damages are overstated.
  12. Provide data to the underwriter for insurance renewal.
  13. Assist members in obtaining insurance coverage and assist with property/casualty loss control efforts.
  14. Issue evidence of coverage and request certificate of insurance.

Senior Casualty Liability Adjuster

  1. Develop and maintain professional relationships with over 20 school district superintendents who are members of the Southwest Washington Insurance Risk Cooperative (SWIRC), and the team of ESD employees who work in Insurance Programs.
  2. Administer complex casualty and liability claims (obtain and manage information, analyze and determine claim coverage, conduct investigations, evaluate and determine potential liability and damages, determine and manage appropriate reserves, negotiate settlements).
  3. Perform necessary administrative tasks (open claims, maintain activity logs, diary review systems, organize files and information and ensure completion and accuracy).
  4. Communicate professionally, orally and in writing, with superintendents, claimants, attorneys, ESD managers and various personnel for the purpose of investigating and resolving claims, responding to inquiries, providing status and statistical summary reports, and promoting SWIRC.
  5. Engage with members and leadership on strategies, claim settlements and SWIRC operations, embody and model professionalism, and perform essential functions with a commitment to accuracy, timeliness and compliance with adopted policies, procedures and guidelines.
  6. Collaborate with Director of Insurance Programs, Loss Control Supervisor and Insurance Program personnel for purposes of training and prevention of casualty, liability and property claims.
  7. Develop and implement litigation management plans, with case management, cost control and disposition activities.
  8. Notify and report to excess insurers on large claims as appropriate.
  9. Control costs on claims where coverage is in question, liability is disputed or damages are overstated.
  10. Perform a range of administrative and operational tasks (provide data to the underwriter for insurance renewal, assist members in obtaining insurance coverage, issue evidence of coverage and request certificates of insurance).

Minimum Qualifications:
Casualty Liability Adjuster

  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. Five years of experience handling liability casualty claims.
  3. Experience with litigated claims.
  4. Valid driver's license.

Senior Casualty Liability Adjuster

  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. 10 or more years of experience handling casualty, liability and property claims.
  3. Five or more years of experience handling litigated claims.
  4. AIC or CPCU certificate.
  5. Valid driver's license.
