Summary: The Senior Commercial Auto Underwriter is responsible for underwriting complex and high-value commercial auto insurance risks with a focus on profitability and growth.
This role requires advanced knowledge of commercial auto exposures, underwriting guidelines, and market dynamics.
The Senior Underwriter serves as a subject matter expert, mentors junior underwriters, and plays a key role in maintaining agency relationships and driving underwriting strategies within the organization.
Key
Responsibilities: Underwriting Expertise : Evaluate, select, and price complex commercial auto risks, including fleets, for-hire trucking, contractors, public auto, and other specialized classes.
Risk Assessment : Analyze applications, loss runs, MVRs, IFTAs, SAFER/CAB reports, and other underwriting data to assess risk quality and exposure.
Portfolio Management : Maintain a profitable book of business by enforcing underwriting discipline and balancing growth objectives with risk appetite.
Agency : Develop and manage strong relationships with appointed agents to drive quality submissions and support business development.
Referrals & Authority : Exercise delegated underwriting authority and make sound decisions; review and approve submissions referred by junior underwriters.
Collaboration : Partner with actuary, claims, and risk control teams to review accounts and identify underwriting trends and opportunities for improvement.
Compliance : Ensure underwriting decisions comply with corporate policies, industry regulations, and applicable state guidelines.
Mentorship & Training : Serve as a resource and mentor to less experienced underwriters; assist in training and onboarding as needed.
Strategic Input : Contribute to underwriting guidelines, product development, and market strategy initiatives.
Education &
Experience: Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Insurance, or related field (preferred). 5–8+ years of commercial auto underwriting experience, preferably with an insurance carrier.
Experience underwriting large fleets and complex risks is highly desirable.
Certifications (Preferred): CPCU, AU, ARM, or similar industry designations.
Skills & Competencies: Advanced underwriting and risk assessment abilities.
Strong knowledge of ISO, DOT/FMCSA regulations, and fleet operations.
Proficient in underwriting systems, rating tools, and Microsoft Office.
Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
Ability to manage a high volume of work and make timely decisions.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
