Job Title: Vice President Aviation

Department: Aviation

Reports to: President CIS and Aviation

Summary: Manage the General Aviation underwriting and policy production of the HFS national General Aviation department. Monitor overall underwriting and profitability of the General Aviation book of business and expand new products as appropriate. Monitor and implement pricing and distribution changes as necessary and appropriate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manage, provide oversight and expand the current HFS General Aviation portfolio.
  • Ensure strict discipline is adhered to as respects target metrics and ratios as agreed to with supervisor.
  • Manage day-to-day activities of the underwriting team ensuring effective risk solicitation, selection, pricing and retention of desirable business.
  • Ensure adherence to approved General Aviation underwriting guidelines and individual underwriter authority statements.
  • Monitor premium and loss data for the General Aviation portfolio with the ultimate goal of profitability across all segments in all states.
  • Track new and renewal pricing for the General Aviation portfolio.
  • Work with actuarial, compliance, product development, claims and legal when setting/adjusting rates and/or forms and in the development of new products.
  • Participate in the financial management and budget process for the Aviation unit and manage expenses for areas of responsibility.
  • Act as contact point for current distribution sources regarding General Aviation and solicit new and renewal business.
  • Market to new distribution sources and make recommendations on accepting/rejecting applicants.
  • Represent the company at various industry functions.
  • Assist, advise and consult with other managers and supervisors as requested.
  • Participate and provide input in reinsurance treaty meetings and negotiations.
  • Work with IT in the implementation of improved technology, systems and automation enhancements.
  • Attend meetings and due diligent audits as requested by parent company.
  • Prepare reports and projects as requested by supervisor.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Eight to ten years of experience in the General Aviation line of business with strong knowledge of financial and operational levers.
  • Four years or more of management experience leading teams of underwriters and support staff.
  • Pilots license preferred.
  • Ability to understand business needs and translate into system requirements for communications to others.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to work in a team environment and be flexible to daily changing needs and job duties.
  • Ability to analyze and problem solve, working closely with others to coordinate and complete projects.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Company policies and procedures. Responsibilities may include interviewing, training employees, planning, assigning and directing work: appraising performance, rewarding, disciplining or coaching employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems within the department.


Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; or five to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses & Registrations:

  • CPCU (preferred)
