Job Description:

Summary: Manage the underwriting and policy production of a multi-state property & casualty insurance company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

•Develop and implement underwriting strategy to meet market needs.

•Manage the day-to-day underwriting function to ensure effective solicitation, selection, pricing, and retention of desirable business.

•Establish and assignment of underwriting authority and implement controls to monitor authority levels are adhered to.

•Establish audit and monitoring procedures to ensure adequate review of underwriting files. Define corrective action to be taken when problems are found.

•Monitor the aggregate exposures on single risks or groups of closely related risks due to catastrophe or excessive insurance, and takes corrective action when required.

•Coordinate with the Claims department in the review and research of coverage issues. Verify payments and sign claims checks. Review notice of first loss and notes on losses of interest.

•Review monthly claims data and pinpoint large loss activity including impact on loss ratio.

•Analyze annual frequency and severity data and losses by state and suggest corrective action to negative loss trends.

•Provide direction to the Policy Production Manager as necessary to ensure effective fulfillment of the policy production functions.

•Ensure effective controls to include operational efficiencies internally and externally, including automation.

•Resolves conflicts and facilitates changes in structure of the Underwriting group to ensure objective fulfillment and swift response to problems and opportunities.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manage employees in the Underwriting department. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or 5-10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge/Skills

•Solid experience in management of Underwriting and Policy Production units with strong knowledge of financial and operational levers.

•Ability to understand business needs and translate into system requirements for communications to others.

•Detail oriented with the ability to work in a team environment and be flexible to daily changing needs and job duties.

•Ability to analyze and problem solve, working closely with others to coordinate and complete projects.

•Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
