Rimkus was retained to help a client understand a minor vehicle collision allegedly involving a Tesla car. Unique Wire, a Rimkus partner, received a thumb drive from Rimkus containing videos from the Tesla. The insurance company client was told the car was parked and unoccupied at the time of the collision; they wanted to verify those details from the Tesla video.

For those not familiar with the Tesla, the car has eight cameras used for its self-driving functions. The cameras point to the front, rear, and both sides of the car. The cameras also have a secondary function to record activity around the car. While the car is moving, the cameras are recording constantly. While it is parked, the cameras record after they are triggered by movement around the car or any impact with the car. The videos are each 60 seconds long.

Unique Wire experts scanned all videos on the thumb drive, which accounted for hundreds of clips over several days and included both parked and driving videos. There were no collisions present in the videos provided on the thumb drive.

Since Tesla stores the video data on an actual thumb drive and not another data storage device, Unique Wire experts speculated that the thumb drive that was provided might be the actual thumb drive that was plugged into the Tesla. If that were the case, there was a possibility Unique Wire could extract data that had been removed from the drive either by the operating system or intentionally by a person who had access to the vehicle.

Unique Wire’s team used highly specialized software to process the thumb drive data and found more than 500 deleted videos. The deleted files were exported off the thumb drive to create a forensic copy of the files and keep the originals intact. Then, experts processed the exported videos and used a special technique to scan through the large volume of videos to find the one that showed the collision.

The video of the collision showed that the car had been parked in a large, flat parking lot akin to what you see at a suburban mall. The assumed owner of the Tesla loaded the car with shopping bags, got in, and then started backing up. In the rear-camera view, Unique Wire experts observed a car parked opposite the Tesla also begin to back up. The two cars collided, and their occupants got out and spoke to each other. The recovered video proved that the Tesla was not parked and unoccupied at the time of the collision as reported.
