Bodily Injury
Physical injury, sickness, or disease sustained by a person, including death resulting therefrom, in liability policies.
Bodily injury (BI) is a defined term in liability policies covering harm to people — not damage to things. Auto policies split BI limits per person and per accident. CGL covers BI from premises and operations.
Emotional distress without physical injury may or may not be covered depending on wording and jurisdiction.
Examples
An auto policy pays BI limits for the other driver's hospital bills and lost wages when you are at fault in a collision.
Common Misconceptions
Confusing BI with property damage or with first party PIP/MedPay. Underestimating future medical damages when limits are low.
