Independent Adjuster

A claims adjuster who contracts with insurers or TPAs to handle claims but is not an employee of a single carrier.

Independent adjusters (IAs) often run their own adjusting firms or work as 1099 contractors for IA firms. They need appropriate state licenses where required and often hold a designated home state license from a licensing state.

Examples

After a regional hailstorm, a carrier deploys independent adjusters to inspect 200 homes in a week.

Common Misconceptions

Assuming IA means unbiased from carrier — they are paid by the insurer. Confusing with public adjuster who represents the insured.
