Tolling
Pausing or extending a legal deadline so the remaining time can run later.
Tolling stops the clock on statutes of limitations or notice periods during certain events — minority, incapacity, defendant absence, or sometimes pending settlement discussions depending on statute. In claims, tolling agreements between parties extend time to sue or investigate.
Examples
Insurer and insured sign a tolling agreement to pause the limitations period for six months while appraisal completes.
Common Misconceptions
Assuming informal promises extend deadlines without a written tolling agreement. Missing that tolling ended and filing too late.
