Uninsured Motorist Coverage
Coverage for your bodily injury (and sometimes property damage) when an at-fault driver has no liability insurance.
UM pays what a negligent uninsured driver would have owed for your injuries. Some states require UM; limits often match liability unless rejected in writing where allowed. UM property damage (UMPD) exists in some states.
Examples
A hit-and-run driver flees and is never identified; your UM coverage pays your medical bills up to limits.
Common Misconceptions
Stacking rules vary by state and policy. Assuming UM covers your car damage in states with BI-only UM.
