10 Most Popular Social Security Nbrs

Wednesday, June 25th, 2003 Fraud

Jennifer Lemus was examining a report that her company’s software had generated. The report showed that of the several hundred thousand policyholders analyzed by the software, several hundred policy holders had identical social security numbers. And the most popular number, by far, was 123-12-3123. The number 123-12-1234 came in a close second. She was far from surprised. The software, developed by Quality Planning Corporation, is designed to help auto insurers better understand the composition of their policyholders, and to identify the high-risk drivers who masquerade as low-risk policyholders. For auto insurance companies, the ability to accurately determine the ‘moral demographics’ of a book of policyholders can mean the difference between making a profit and suffering an underwriting loss. In many states, legislation limits insurers’ ability to raise rates.
