Farmer sentenced for making false crop insurance claims

A 50-year-old farmer was sentenced Wednesday to 2½ years in prison for filing false insurance benefits for crops in Contra Costa, San Joaquin and Lassen counties. Gregory Peter Torlai, of Stockton, also must pay a $10,000 fine, pay $216,516 in restitution and complete three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. He was sentenced by federal Judge John A. Mendez in a Sacramento courtroom.
