Downtown Iowa City Fire Guts Two Buildings

A fast-moving fire gutted a downtown Iowa City business early Saturday morning and also did considerable smoke, water and fire damage to some adjacent buildings as well. Fire officials say the fire at Bruegger’s Bagel shop, 225 Iowa Avenue, came in shortly after 2:00 Saturday morning. One resident of a nearby apartment, Cameron Overcash, said he and a roommate were awakened by police and told to get out. “We got out and looked out and saw Bruegger’s and we saw flames on top of the building the size of a small camp fire. We got some stuff and came down and probably in 20 minutes it blew up and there was fire everywhere,” Overcash said.
