Firefighters remained at the scene of a massive seven-alarm fire in Fairfield Tuesday night that burned five homes and forced the evacuation of about 50 residents in the area of the blaze earlier in the day, fire officials said. The fire started along Interstate Highway 80 at about 3:40 p.m. and quickly spread to homes along parallel Marigold Drive, according to Fairfield fire officials. Strong Delta winds blew the flames along the freeway sound wall, sending burning embers into the sky and dropping them right onto the neighboring homes. Firefighters said they immediately recognized the danger and called seven alarms.
