15 rescued from Iowa City apartment fire

Firefighters rescued 15 people early Monday after a fire started in an Iowa City apartment complex. Officials with the Iowa City Fire Department responded at 5:09 a.m. to an apartment fire at 614 E. Jefferson St. Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke on the second floor and smoke coming from the windows on the third floor. Several building occupants were at the windows of the second and third floors in need of rescue. While some residents in the 12-unit apartment building were escorted out of the complex, firefighters used ladders to help others from the burning building.
