Two people escaped a burning house early Wednesday morning in the 2900 block of Southeast Salmon Street, officials said, thanks to working smoke alarms. Lt. Damon Simmons, a spokesman for the Portland Fire Bureau, said crews arrived just after 2 a.m. to the two-story home and found it entirely ablaze, including a detached garage. A downed, live electrical line had fallen down in the front yard, hampering firefighting efforts. Crews were able to knock down the fire, but Simmons said full containment was slowed by fire burning in voids and spaces inside the walls.
