Firefighters responded to a blaze that damaged a church in Westlake on Friday. Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters arrived to find an awning over a converted carport alight. The blaze started in a childrens play area next to "The Beacon," a Korean Presbyterian church located at 929 South Westlake Avenue. The fire quickly spread to the church building itself and extended into office, though there was no damage to the sanctuary. It took 55 firefighters 19 minutes to knock the blaze down, and no injuries have been reported. Residents from a nearby building self-evacuated.
