Heavy flames and smoke ripped through a row of businesses in Durham on Sunday night. A fire broke out on Sunday around 8:30 p.m. at 407 Old Oxford Road near Danube Lane. Hernandez Used Tires, a car body shop and D’s Tobacco and Grocery convenience store were all heavily damaged. Crews were still on the scene several hours later battling flames. A Duke Energy crew was called in to cut a power line that began sparking. Convenience store clerk Ahmed Naji said he heard a pop before lights began flickering. Then, he said a customer in his store reported seeing flames. That’s when he called 911.
