Severe Storms Damage Kansas Businesses, Homes

A storm with hurricane-force winds pounded south central Kansas early Friday, causing widespread damage. The storm reached the Wichita area after 12:30 a.m. Numerous trees and signs were damaged by the wind. A number of buildings suffered roof damage. Figeac Aerospace near 39th and Webb Road lost its roof. There is widespread damage in Newton. KAKE’s Bryan Ramsdale found extensive damage to the Alco building and Lupe’s restaurant. Two semis were knocked off I-135 near Newton. The drivers suffered minor injuries. The KAKE WeatherBug network recorded a 89 mile per hour wind gust at the Kansas Aviation Museum.
