The fire that consumed a building on the campus of St. Michael’s Villa, owned by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, sparked in a compressor located in the building’s basement and traveled an elevator shaft, Mayor Mario Kranjac said. About 80 nuns were evacuated from the complex, located off Hudson Terrace, with the help of the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police. One of the nuns lost a cat to smoke inhalation. “That is the one tragedy we’re dealing with here,” Kranjac said. “But everyone else is fine.”
