A major ice storm wreaked havoc throughout central Lane County on Wednesday evening, as ice-glazed trees toppled onto cars, homes and power lines to cut electricity to thousands of residents. As of 9 p.m., the Eugene Water & Electric Board said about 11,000 households were without power, and those numbers most likely would climb overnight. Hardest-hit were EWEB customers in west and south Eugene and those along River Road, it reported. Another 4,050 Lane County customers of Lane Electric Cooperative were without power as of 9 p.m., according to the companys online power outage map.
