Fort Wayne and Allen County officials had to divert traffic from numerous streets and evacuate residents from their homes tonight as more than an inch of rain inundated the area in four hours, causing flash floods. The National Weather Service measured 1.08 inches of rain between 4 and 8 p.m. at Fort Wayne International Airport, said Geoff Heidelberger, meteorologist at the weather service’s office in Syracuse. The rains began around 2 p.m. Wednesday and could last until noon Thursday, with up to two inches expected by then, he said. Underpasses and other low-lying areas quickly became flooded and the high water forced some residents from their homes on the city’s south side.
