Record rain swamped Dane County and the Madison area causing widespread flooding, the National Weather Service said Tuesday. One man was reported missing in Madison Monday night after being swept away by swift moving floodwaters after getting out of a stranded vehicle. Dane County Executive Joe Parisi declared a state of emergency Tuesday because of the flooding. There were reports of 10 to 13 inches of rain from just north of Verona to Middleton to Cross Plains along U.S. Highway 14, the National Weather Service at Sullivan said. Reports from Cross Plains, Black Earth and Mazomanie indicated that those areas are submerged and a large rescue effort was ongoing to evacuate people to higher ground, the weather service and Dane County emergency management said.
