Powerful Winds Lift Roofs Off Eaton, Indiana Homes

Residents of the small Delaware County community of Eaton want to know what hit them Saturday night. The storm destroyed one home and severely damaged others. There weren’t any tornado or severe weather warnings. Luck and quick thinking kept people alive. Homeowner Terry Faust said the roof lifted up and crashed down, blowing out a wall and twisting the entire structure. "I kinda got lucky," Faust said with half a grin. "I was lucky, compared my house to the houses next to me." The entire roof was ripped off one neighbor’s house. The owner and his son were inside. They weren’t hurt but the home is unlivable. Two houses away, Dave and Cindy Smith’s house was torn apart around them. "It was unbelievable," said Dave. "It’s surprising. It is totally destroyed. We are lucky to be alive." The National Weather Service believes straight line winds more than 80 mph or a microburst hit the area at about 9:30 Saturday night.
