Phoenix, AZ – Despite a new Arizona law, firefighters say their workers’ compensation claims are being denied for the cancers they develop as a result of their jobs.
Cities and towns in Arizona, however, say that’s not the case.
In 2017, Arizona expanded its workers’ compensation law for firefighters to include more cancers presumed to be caused by the toxic chemicals firefighters are exposed to on a daily basis. Even though the law puts the onus of proving a cancer is not firefighting-related on the cities and towns for which firefighters work, firefighters say the municipalities they’re protecting aren’t protecting them in their time of need.
