The 2024 Drug Testing Indexâ„¢ (DTI), presented by Quest Diagnostics, continues to serve as an indispensable resource in monitoring drug use among American workers. Since its inception in 1988, the DTI has provided insights into the patterns of drug positivity among different sectors of the workforce, including federally mandated, safety-sensitive employees and the broader general US workforce.

This year’s report underscores a significant rise in the instances of drug test manipulation, with substituted specimens in the general workforce increasing by over 600% according to an analysis of more than 5.5 million deidentified drug tests conducted in 2023. This uptick points to a growing challenge in maintaining drug-free workplaces across industries.

Moreover, the latest data reveal a concerning trend in marijuana use. The general US workforce saw a 4.7% increase in marijuana positivity from the previous year, with states that have legalized recreational use recording higher positivity rates. This ongoing rise coincides with changing state legislations, suggesting a complex landscape for employers navigating drug policy enforcement.

Quest Diagnostics has also enhanced its service offerings, integrating clinical testing, drug testing, and population health management into a unified solution for employers. This consolidation aims to streamline the administrative process, thereby optimizing resources and potentially reducing costs while maintaining a comprehensive approach to employee wellness.

Employers are encouraged to consider the implications of these findings on their current drug testing policies and to explore options like oral fluid drug testing, which offers flexibility and immediate results, to strengthen their drug-free workplace programs.
