The City of Orlando’s Streets and Stormwater Division has announced a critical lake alert for Lake Ivanhoe, triggered by a significant mineral oil spill. The incident came to light on April 4 when the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) identified a sudden loss of oil pressure in an underground line. Immediate measures were taken to halt the system’s pressurization upon the discovery of mineral oil discharging visibly.
An estimated 1,800 gallons of mineral oil leaked into the surrounding soil, stormwater systems, and directly into Lake Ivanhoe. This environmental mishap has prompted city officials to issue a precautionary advisory against engaging in water-related activities at the lake, including the use of lake water for irrigation purposes. To ensure public safety and awareness, signage is being installed around the lake perimeter.
Mineral oil, serving as an insulator within oil-filled electrical cables, has been a global standard since the late 1950s. However, spills of this nature pose significant risks to water quality and local ecosystems, highlighting the need for stringent monitoring and rapid response strategies in the event of such leaks.
