The United States heartland faced another severe weather outbreak following Monday’s damaging storms, with Tuesday’s events producing a deluge of reports detailing damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. The morning’s severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the Ohio Valley, succeeded by discrete supercells in the late afternoon and evening that further battered the region. The Ohio River communities bore the brunt, with significant damage to trees, power lines, and buildings, culminating in over 250,000 electrical outages, notably in West Virginia.

Early on Tuesday, an 84-mph wind gust near Evansville, Indiana, marked the onset of extensive storm damage, particularly on the city’s north side. The National Weather Service reported various instances of downed trees, power lines, and mobile home damage throughout Vanderburgh, Indiana, with similar destruction in southern Boonville, Indiana, and snapped utility poles in Chrisney, Indiana. Uniontown, Kentucky, recorded minor injuries due to a tree falling on a mobile home. Ohio and West Virginia saw widespread structural damages, tree, and power line devastation, including significant damage in Proctorville, Ohio, and the flipping of trailers in Hanging Rock, Ohio. High winds also flipped vehicles on I 265 westbound near the Lewis and Clark Bridge.

The governors of Kentucky and West Virginia preemptively declared states of emergency in anticipation of the storm’s peak. Williamson County, Illinois, experienced substantial property damage, with significant business and residential impacts. Louisville, Kentucky, declared a local state of emergency following thousands of power outages, though no injuries were reported.

The storm system extended its fury into Georgia and Alabama, with tornado-warned storms causing considerable damage and power outages in both states. Rockdale County, Georgia, and Chilton, Alabama, were notably impacted, with possible tornadoes causing tree and structural damages. The events have prompted emergency responses and safety advisories, emphasizing the storms’ extensive impact across multiple states.
