The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has renewed its partnership with Colorado State University (CSU) by providing a $308 million grant over five years. This funding supports the ongoing operations of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at CSU. Established in 1980, CIRA is a collaboration between NOAA and CSU’s Department of Atmospheric Science, focusing on satellite remote sensing, tropical storm research, fire weather forecasting, and the development of AI tools.

CIRA’s work is integral to advancing weather and climate research, providing valuable data and tools used by meteorologists and the public to monitor severe weather and wildfires. The institute also plays a crucial role in training meteorologists and developing educational programs to benefit developing countries.

The renewed partnership strengthens CSU’s position as a leading atmospheric science program. CIRA’s researchers collaborate with multiple federal agencies, including NASA, the National Park Service, and the Department of Defense, contributing to significant projects such as national security meteorology and wildfire research. This partnership continues to bridge academic research and practical applications, enhancing NOAA’s forecasting capabilities and societal impact.
