Adjusting Power-Surge Damages

Monday, August 12th, 2002 Property

Each year, insurance companies are confronted by an onslaught of claims involving electronic equipment suspected of being damaged by some type of a power surge. Because a surge often leaves no telltale marks and surge damages can vary from loss to loss, equipment damaged by age, normal wear and tear, or improper use often gets mixed into some claims. If your thoughts are that you can turn to the local service shop for assistance, don’t be surprised if you get statements indicating that the surge has weakened the circuitry, the life expectancy has been reduced because of the surge, or the equipment can be fixed, but other damages are likely to turn up at a later time and that repair attempts are throwing good money after bad. Whether such statements are based on ignorance or a desire to sell more equipment, inaccurate information, combined with an insured’s desire to upgrade capabilities, can create a problem.
