Alex Upgraded To A Hurricane
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2004 Catastrophe PropertyUpgraded from a tropical storm early Tuesday, Hurricane Alex picked up strength and speed as it spun along the coast of North Carolina, but most of the storm-hardened residents of the Outer Banks didn’t bother to board their windows. The storm’s sustained wind around its center had accelerated to nearly 90 mph, with higher gusts, and additional strengthening was possible, the National Hurricane Center said. On shore, rain blew along the thin Outer Banks chain of islands, with up to 5 inches of rain possible in some areas, the National Weather Service said. Motel parking lots in the area were still full Tuesday morning, indicating few tourists had headed inland.
