
The swollen Amite River ran through much of northeast Ascension Parish on Sunday afternoon, leaving only a few islands of dry land which may not last. The flood that devastated Louisiana in the past week isnt over for Ascension residents it hasnt even reached its peak. "We expect the worst of it has not yet come," said Ascension Parish planning and development section chief Meredith Conger. To the north, floodwaters have begun to drain, sending the runoff downstream to communities like the one across the river from Port Vincent. Authorities are particularly concerned about neighborhoods north of La. 42, east of La. 431 and south of Gold Place Road, said parish spokesman Lester Kenyon.
